Who we are

CADS Calgary is the local zone of the Canadian Association for Disabled Skiing – a dynamic group of outdoor enthusiasts who share a passion for enabling others to enjoy one of Canada’s most popular winter pastimes.

Since 1970, CADS has been helping people with a variety of disabilities to lead richer and fuller lives through recreational and competitive skiing and snowboarding programs. Using specialized equipment and the expertise of our trained volunteer instructors, hundreds of people with varying degrees of physical and/or intellectual challenges have learned to ski and board with confidence.

CADS lessons are available to people with a variety of challenges including cognitive and learning disabilities, visual and hearing impairments, paraplegic and quadriplegic, amputees, and disabilities related to Cerebral Palsy and other muscular disorders.

Mission & Vision

Mission: CADS Calgary creates a positive, inclusive community for persons with disabilities and their families through removing barriers to experience alpine adaptive snow sports.

Vision: The vision of CADS Calgary is to develop a community of life-long, passionate adaptive skiers and snowboarders at ski areas everywhere.

What your investment supports

-With $5,000 CADS Calgary can purchase a sit-ski, enabling a paraplegic or quadriplegic individual to participate in the program

-For $2,500 CADS Calgary can host a Family & Friends evening to give volunteers and participants the opportunity to enjoy a fun evening of skiing at COP

-A gift of $1,000 covers the cost of lessons for two students, enabling them to enjoy skiing using adaptive methods

Why support disabled skiing

As a non-profit organization run by volunteers, CADS Calgary is continually looking for organizations to partner with that share our vision of a community strengthened by empowered families and individuals. Supporting CADS not only enables us to offer disabled skiing in Calgary, but provides participants with the opportunity to actively function in the community. For many in the program, a positive experience with CADS opens the door for individuals who may never have functioned outside of their disability and its limitations.

Being active is a societal challenge, and this has increased implications for those with a disability. The development of fundamental movement skills and motor skills is critical to establishing the foundation for participation in many
sports and physical activities.  A child who has not had the opportunity to develop these basic motor skills experiences difficulties or barriers when participating in sport experiences, or later school-based programs that involve more difficult skills.

As we continue to grow the program and awareness of disabled skiing, we take careful consideration of the importance of providing these opportunities in Calgary. As we invest in those with disability for success, these transferable skills and achievements lead to healthy, functioning, contributing persons in our community, strengthening families and society as a whole.
